How we calculate this

Fill dirt volume uses the standard length × width × depth ÷ 27 formula. Dirt density varies significantly by moisture content and composition, so this calculator lets you override the default 2,000 lbs/cu yd estimate.

Example

A 15 ft × 15 ft area needing 6 inches of backfill requires about 4.17 cubic yards of fill dirt, or roughly 4.6 cubic yards with a 10% waste allowance.

Measuring tips

For grading and leveling, measure the low points you need to fill relative to your target grade. For excavation backfill, measure the volume of the void being filled.

Common mistakes

  • Not accounting for settling — fill dirt compacts over time and may need a top-up.
  • Using topsoil pricing/density assumptions for fill dirt (they differ).
  • Forgetting that wet dirt weighs significantly more than dry dirt.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?

Fill dirt is used for grading and structural backfill and typically contains less organic matter. Topsoil is nutrient-rich and used for planting — see our Topsoil Calculator.

How much does fill dirt weigh per cubic yard?

Roughly 2,000 lbs (1 ton) per cubic yard for dry dirt, more when wet.
