How to Calculate Linear Feet
Linear feet is simply a straight-line length measurement — it has nothing to do with area or width. A fence line, a baseboard run, or a piece of trim is measured in linear feet regardless of how tall or wide the material itself is.
The most common mistake is forgetting to add up multiple separate runs — a fence with three sides, or a room with several walls needing trim, needs each segment measured and totaled, not just the longest single wall.
The Linear Foot Calculator lets you enter multiple runs and adds a waste allowance automatically, which matters most on fence projects — see How to Estimate Fence Materials for the full workflow.
