How Much Sand Do I Need?
Sand depth depends on the job: a paver or paving-stone base typically uses a 1-inch leveling layer on top of a compacted gravel base, while sandboxes and play areas usually call for 6–12 inches for proper cushioning.
Like gravel, sand is usually priced by the ton rather than the cubic yard. A cubic yard of sand weighs roughly 2,600–3,000 lbs depending on moisture content and grain type (coarse sand runs heavier than fine play sand).
The Sand Calculator converts your area and depth into both cubic yards and tons in one step.
