Asphalt tonnage starts the same way as any volume calculation — area × thickness — but then converts to weight using a typical hot-mix asphalt density of about 145 lbs per cubic foot (roughly 3,900 lbs per cubic yard).

Residential driveways typically use 2–3 inches of asphalt over a compacted gravel base; commercial areas often use 3–4 inches or more to handle heavier traffic.
